A Life Built Around Animals

My name is Deanna, and I've spent my life and livelihood with animals. I've been riding since I was 13 in South County Missouri, and that early love for horses set the course for everything that followed.

Over the years, I built my own stables and ran a public rental string at Greensfelder Park Stables, located behind Six Flags in Eureka, Missouri. That meant managing a string of trail horses for the public — selecting calm, reliable mounts, keeping them sound and well-conditioned, and making sure every family that came through had a safe, memorable ride. You learn fast which horses can handle a nervous first-timer versus an experienced rider, and you learn to read both the animals and the people.

Shire Gate Farms

From there, I made the move to ride and manage horses at the Witherspoon Farm, called Shire Gate Farms in Owensville, Missouri, where I spent 8 years running nearly every aspect of the operation.

The horse program alone was a full-time job. I kept up to 14 horses legged up at any given time — meaning fit, conditioned, and ready to ride. That's daily turnout, hoof care schedules with the farrier, monitoring for lameness or injury, managing feed programs for each individual horse based on their workload and body condition, and knowing when something was off before it became a problem. I did all the hauling — to the vet, to shows, to new pastures. A truck and trailer were always hitched up and ready to go.

But the horses were just the beginning. I helped the owner procure additional acreage to expand the farm, then started and maintained a cow-calf operation from the ground up. That meant selecting breeding stock, managing the bull, monitoring heat cycles, assisting with calving when needed — including middle-of-the-night births in freezing weather — and making sure every calf got colostrum in that critical first window. I purchased cattle at auction, evaluated bloodlines and conformation, hauled animals to slaughter facilities, and managed the farm's direct-to-customer beef sales from order to delivery.

I also procured goats and hogs for breeding programs on the property. Each species has its own reproductive timeline, nutritional demands, and management challenges. Goats kid differently than cows calve. Hogs farrow differently than either. Managing multiple species at once teaches you to think in systems — how one operation's schedule affects another, how to prioritize when three things need attention at the same time.

Beyond the animals, I coordinated with builders, excavators, veterinarians, and multiple vet hospitals. I maintained the five homes on the property, handled party planning and hosting for the owner's guests, and kept the entire operation running. It was all-hands, all-hours, and I loved every minute of it. But the time came to part ways for myself and my three children.

What the Farm Taught Me

After a six-month hiatus, I decided to work for the USPS. I loved my customers, but an injury on the job made it impossible to continue as a City Letter Carrier.

But those years on the farm never left me. I learned to read an animal's body language before they show obvious signs of distress. I learned how to manage nutrition for a pregnant mother differently at each trimester. I learned genetic planning — which pairings produce the healthiest, strongest offspring, and which bloodlines to avoid. I learned neonatal care: how to intervene when a birth goes wrong, how to tube-feed a baby that won't nurse, how to keep a weak newborn alive through its first critical 48 hours. And I learned that the animals who are handled with patience and consistency from day one grow into the most confident, trusting adults.

Every single one of those skills translates directly to what I do now. The genetics are smaller. The species is different. But the principles — careful selection, attentive care, relentless dedication — are exactly the same.

The Road to Blue Sky

A New Chapter

On January 9th, 2025, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma — triple negative breast cancer. I just finished chemotherapy and immunotherapy on February 19th, 2026.

During that journey, I realized that I can no longer do large animals and the hard farm work. Side effects have changed many things. But then we realized — I can still take my love and passion for animals and pour that into cats. I blame my perfect crazy Bengal, Bullzeye, for showing me the way.

We chose the Oriental breed for several reasons: their intelligence, their crazy chatter, their 3 AM zoomies, and when they love — they love fiercely. From the moment I met my first Oriental, I was hooked. These aren't ordinary cats — they're ridiculous, brilliant, opinionated little beings who will follow you to the bathroom just to tell you about their day. They have feelings that get hurt. They have opinions about your breakfast choices. They will absolutely honk at you when you're not paying them enough attention.

What started as healing became a passion, and Blue Sky Cattery was born. I hope you enjoy our animals as much as we do!

How We Raise Our Cats

Raised Underfoot

Our kittens aren't raised in a separate room or a cage — they're raised underfoot, right in the heart of our home. From the critical 2-7 week socialization window onward, they experience family life: the sounds of the kitchen, the rhythm of daily routines, the warmth of being held and loved. Kittens raised this way develop the confident, well-adjusted personalities that Oriental Shorthairs are famous for.

Health Is Everything

Every breeding cat in our program is health tested. We monitor family history for hepatic amyloidosis and maintain regular veterinary screening for congenital heart conditions. We don't cut corners on health — because a beautiful cat means nothing if it isn't a healthy cat.

Nutrition We Trust

Our cats eat Loyall Life Cat & Kitten Salmon & Ocean Fish — real salmon first ingredient, 31% protein, no corn, wheat, soy, or by-products. We supplement with taurine for heart and eye health. And we prepare our own homemade pâté from human-grade proteins and organ meats, because we believe in knowing exactly what goes into every meal our cats eat.

Closed Cattery

We operate as a closed cattery — and this is one of the strongest signs of a responsible breeder. Feline panleukopenia can be carried on shoes and clothing with a 90% mortality rate in unvaccinated kittens. We protect our nursery the same way a hospital protects its NICU. We offer live video calls, weekly updates, and welcome you to visit at pickup time.

Country Living

The rolling countryside of Northwest Missouri is more than our address — it's an advantage. Our cats live in a peaceful, spacious home far from the stress, noise, and disease risks of urban environments. The fresh air, the quiet, and the open sky aren't just good for us — they're good for our cats and the kittens they raise.

Lifetime Support

When you adopt a Blue Sky kitten, you're not just getting a cat — you're joining our family. We provide lifetime breeder support for every kitten we place. Questions about nutrition, behavior, health, or anything else? We're always just a call or text away. Our relationship doesn't end at pickup — it's just beginning.

The Serengeti Vision

Blue Sky Cattery's story is just beginning. While our Oriental Shorthair program is the foundation, we're building toward something rare and extraordinary: becoming one of fewer than 5-10 active Serengeti breeders in the entire United States.

The Serengeti cat is one of the rarest domestic breeds on earth — created by crossing Bengal fathers with Oriental Shorthair mothers to produce a cat that looks like a wild African Serval but is 100% domestic. Our Oriental Shorthair program provides the perfect genetic foundation for this rare breed, and our decades of breeding experience give us the knowledge to do it right.

The combination of Oriental Shorthairs and Serengetis isn't just a business plan — it's a breeding program that makes genetic and strategic sense. Two breeds connected by the Oriental Shorthair bloodline, raised by a breeder who has spent a lifetime understanding what it takes to produce healthy, beautiful animals.
